If planets are what and signs are how, houses are where. Each of the twelve houses represents an area of life, and a planet’s house placement is read as the arena in which that planet’s energy plays out.

1st house — self and first impressions. How you present before anyone knows you.
2nd house — money, possessions, personal values around security.
3rd house — communication, siblings, everyday learning and local surroundings.
4th house — home, family, roots, your private inner base.
5th house — creativity, romance, pleasure, self-expression.
6th house — daily routine, health habits, work in the practical sense.
7th house — partnerships, marriage, one-to-one relationships including open rivals.
8th house — shared resources, transformation, what gets inherited or merged with others.
9th house — travel, higher education, belief systems, the big-picture view.
10th house — career, public reputation, the mark you leave professionally.
11th house — friendships, communities, hopes for the future.
12th house — the subconscious, endings, what stays hidden even from yourself.
Why house placement changes the reading
The same planet lands differently depending on the house it occupies. Venus — values and attraction — in the 2nd house reads toward financial values and taste in possessions. The same Venus in the 7th house reads toward what you want from a partner.
Same planet, same meaning at the core, completely different arena.
Why houses need your birth time
Unlike signs, which shift monthly or faster, house placements depend on the exact time and place you were born — the houses are calculated from the horizon at that specific moment, which rotates through the whole chart across a single day.
Without an accurate birth time, house placements cannot be calculated reliably. If you want to calculate your natal chart and have your houses come out accurately, your birth certificate or hospital record is worth tracking down first.
Where to start
Look up your own chart and find which houses your sun, moon and rising fall in. Those three alone will tell you a good deal about which parts of life your chart puts weight on.
Once you know which houses carry the most weight in your chart, using that information for genuine self-reflection is where a chart tends to become more than a curiosity.
